GetJar - scanR brings its innovation to the world with GetJar


Innovation is often key to business success, but it’s not always the case that great ideas alone can build a business. Taking an innovative new product or service into the mobile arena is as challenging as it is competitive – not least because of the explosion of interest, funding and user demand for ever more powerful and versatile applications.


scanR (www.scanR.com) is a mobile service which demonstrates just what can be achieved when innovation successfully reaches the mass market. It’s an application which simply stated turns a camera phone into a copier, scanner and fax. This can be applied to a whole range of situations. For example, taking a picture of the writing on a whiteboard and emailing it to scanR will quickly return a PDF file with all the whiteboard writing clearly legible. scanR operates just as successfully for other uses such as capture the text on documents or contact information from business cards.


For scanR, their ability to innovate was translated into business success in no small measure due to their choice of distribution and marketing partners. scanR first used the GetJar mobile applications portal in October 2006 with their first application upload. As the worldwide leader in mobile application distribution, GetJar has served over 200 million application downloads in two years, and is currently running at over 14 million per month.


While any application can be uploaded and downloaded free of charge, and through its interactive tools deliver huge numbers of users for free, GetJar also offers advertising for developers who want extra visibility. “We’ve successfully used each of GetJar’s main advertising channels including home page advertising, featured site placement and the GetJar Pay Per Download service,” explained Chris Dury, VP of Marketing at scanR. “We have found all of them to be highly effective.”


“GetJar has worked extremely well for scanR in building our user base and initially accounted for about 50% of our total downloads,” said Dury. “But the value in GetJar is not just the volume of downloads; it’s also the ability to target users with phones that have the camera and file access we require.”


scanR also benefits from the insight GetJar can provide into the preferences and handsets used by each person visiting the site. “The way users discover applications on GetJar is better than anything else out there,” said Dury. “On the most websites, users have to state what phone they have, which some find difficult. On the GetJar mobile site, people only see applications that run on their phone, so the experience is better for the users and the advertiser.”


“Outside of our relationships with network operators, GetJar is the largest source of new users for scanR,” said Dury. “It’s a cost effective, large scale channel for mobile downloads. If you have a mobile application and want to reach new users quickly and inexpensively, GetJar needs to be your starting point.”
