Q: What is a GetJar Web App?

A: A Mobile Site shortcut is a package of small mobile applications (Java, Symbian, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry) that is provided free by GetJar to the owner of any mobile website or Mobile Site shortcut. The Mobile Site shortcut becomes a "launcher" application for the mobile web site. Users download the Mobile Site shortcut from GetJar and it resides on the phone in the same area as other downloaded applications. When the Mobile Site shortcut is clicked, it opens the browser and directs the user to the mobile site.

The main benefit of the Mobile Site shortcut is to make the mobile site stickier for the user, and more likely to be launched. Otherwise, the mobile site URL is simply a link in the browser bookmarks list, and less visible. Since we launched the Web a few months ago, our statistics show that a Mobile Site with a Mobile Site shortcut is launched almost four times as often as a standard browser link.

The second benefit of the Mobile Site shortcut are the statistics that GetJar provides regarding handsets hitting the site, what handsets download the Mobile Site shortcut, when the site is launched, how many times it's launched, etc. These stats are available to the mobile developer within his Developer Portal on GetJar.
